As mentioned in my previous article, I am currently preparing for a three week detoxification based on The Detox Box from Dr. Mark Hyman.
I must admit, this detoxification program does take up a lot of time.
I am just now catching up reporting back to you and would like to start with the preparation that it took to get ready for the program.
First, of course, I had to study the materials in The Detox Box, which included an audio CD, a small booklet, and a set of cards. Based on this information the challenge was to research all the needed supplements, where to get them, how much was needed (based on a commitment of three weeks to the program), and what costs were involved. I am planning on publishing the results of this work on a separate page.
One week before beginning with the program it is already necessary to cut out all sugar and white flour in the diet. This will be done cold turkey. To cut out all caffeine will require a more gentle approach of cutting coffee down to one cup a day for 3 days, and then having 1 cup of caffeinated green tea for the next 4 days.
I missed my coffee the most. I don’t really think I am addicted to caffeine, since I also drink plenty of decaf, but I am addicted to the feeling of comfort a nice cup of coffee brings to me. Sigh.
The last things to do are finding places to take saunas and get massages, which will flush the toxins released from the body during the detox, cleaning out the fridge and pantry from unhealthy foods, and finally purchasing the foods for the first week of detox. Those include fish, brown rice, vegetables, vegetable juices, and fruits.
Update:
The detox ended up lasting 4 – 5 weeks because of the slow re-introduction of food groups every three days at the end of the 3 week period.
The first 12 days were the hardest. I missed and craved my comfort foods so much! After that, it somehow became much easier.
The good news is that I lost about 7lbs and continued losing another 5lbs in the weeks following the detox. I really like this kind of detoxification program – eating real foods and using supportive supplements and would prefer it any day over a fast.
Shortly after the detox I ended up getting sick, which really clouded my judgement about the effectiveness of this detox. That’s why I stopped reporting back to you, and will leave it to you to give it a try yourself. I would love to hear about your experiences with either this program or any other detoxification program you might have tried.
